What is Kokedama?
The name "koke" means moss, and "dama" means ball, so kokedama [苔玉] literally translates to "moss ball". They are made by taking a ball of dirt and rolling it in moss.
The moss is then held together with twine, and the plant is left to grow out of the moss ball. The result is a potted plant that can be hung or placed on a surface.
The "moss balls" appeared in Japan more than 500 years ago, Kokedama is also called the Bonsai of the poor, for the simplicity of making and the ease of care.
Kokedama are easy to care for. Just water them once a week and they will be happy. If you live in a dry climate, you may need to water them more often.
The first person to send a ball of moss to the west was Mr. Isao Umiji, who has been making this art since 2002.

How to make a Kokedama
To make a kokedama, you will need:
- A plant with a small root ball
- leaf moss
- A rope
- A bowl or container with water
- a pair of scissors
Step 1: Soak the moss in water for about 30 minutes. This will make the job easier.
Step 2: Wrap the root ball in the moss, using your hands to pack it in place.
Step 3: Once the root ball is completely covered, start wrapping it with string, making sure to wrap it tightly.
Step 4: Remove any excess wire, then place the kokedama in a bowl or container with water.
Step 5: Place the kokedama in a location where it will receive indirect sunlight. Allow the moss to dry completely between waterings.
