Everyday Phrases in Japanese

Something must have happened.
There must be something.

  • 何か = something.
  • はず = must, have.
  • ある = there is, there is, there is.
  • だ = é (to be) / copula.

  • 行く = go / follow.
わたし外国がいこく年間ねんかん20かいきます。

I travel 20 times a year abroad.

  • 外国 = outside.
  • 年間 = ( period of ) year / period per year.
  • 回 = counter for (occurrence: times)
学校がっこうまであるきましょう。

Let's walk to school.

  • school = school
  • 歩く = walk / walk.
わたしまちあるくのがきです。

I like to walk in the city.

  • 町 = city.
  • 好き = to like, enjoy.
一人ひとりある必要ひつようはありません。

You don't have to walk alone.

  • 一人 = alone
  • で = O de presents form, i.e. (in a solitary form)
  • 必要 = necessary, necessity, essential, indispensable.
  • 必要はありません = not necessary.
わたしはできるだけゆっくりとあるきました。

I walked as slowly as I could.

As far as I could, I walked slowly.

  • できるだけ = as much as you can / as much as you are able / as far as you are able.
  • ゆっくり = slowly. / slowly / without haste.
  • 歩く = walk.
  • 歩きます = walk. (in masu form) - polite.
  • 歩きました = walked (conclusively)
あれもこれも、色々いろいろ興味深きょうみぶかいものがまえあらわれる。

  • 冊 = counter for books.
  • 買う = buy.
このほんはすごく面白おもしろかった。

This book was very interesting.

  • この = this
  • すごく = quite, very much.
  • 面白い = interesting.
  • 面白かった = it was interesting, it was interesting.
かれ英語えいごのレベルはわたしおなじくらいだ。

His English level is approximately the same as mine.

  • 英語 = English.
  • レベル = level.
  • 同じ = same, equal.
  • くらい = approximately, around.
上田うえだわたしおなとしです。

Ueda and I are the same age.

  • 同じ = same, equal.
  • 年 = age.
たしか、彼女かのじょわたしおな時間じかんから出勤しゅっきんしている。

In fact, she's working the same hours as I am.

  • 時間 = hour(s).
  • 出勤する = go to work, stay at work, presence at work.
